Provenance: Offered as a gift by the French King Louis XV in 1746 to Count Heinrich von Brühl (1700-1763) Prime Minister to Augustus III, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony. Purchased to decorate the grand apartment of the Royal Palace in Dresden (1768). Then collection of Mme Charles Bénard le Pontois, née Gabrielle Philippson (1880-1941). Seized in 1941 by the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenber. Acquired through Walter Bornheim (1888-1971) for the collections of Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring (1893-1946). Recovered by the 7th US Army and repatriated to France in 1946, (inv. OAR 64). Returned to the heirs of Gabrielle Philippson in Paris in 2022.
